Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, visited a
semiconductor plant at Sendai in Japan’s Miyagi prefecture and the Tokyo Electron Factory
(TEL Miyagi), the pioneering semiconductor company of Japan. Both leaders travelled in a
bullet train to Sendai, situated at a distance of 300 kilometers from Tokyo.
As of now, India’s semiconductor manufacturing is Modi’s top priority. On the visit, PM
Modi discussed with plant members about TEL’s current and future collaborations with
India to make his dream of empowering India’s semiconductor industry.
Modi sees Japan as a major partner to achieve his semiconductor goals, as both nations
have extensively spoken about opportunities to foster collaboration in the semiconductor
supply chain.
From the first days of his visit to Japan, Modi has mentioned the shared vision with Japan to
build a trusted and strong semiconductor supply chain. At the India-Japan Economic
Forum, he even highlighted the manufacturing of batteries, semiconductors, and robotics as
primary areas of collaboration between both nations towards Make in India.
Sharing about his visit to X, PM Modi shared, “In Tokyo, we had interaction with the
governors of 16 prefectures of Japan. The vital pillar of India-Japan relations is the State-
prefecture cooperation. And there is a great scope of cooperation in fields like innovation,
trade, entrepreneurship, and more. Some of the futuristic sectors, including tech, AI, and
startups, would benefit both nations.
Additionally, India’s External Affairs Ministry shared details of the interaction on the
platform. As shared, several private sector companies in Japan have signed around 150
MoUs in the last two years in different fields.
Japanese PM Ishiba mentioned three priorities between both countries: making the P2P
partnership strong, tech infusion and green initiatives and the market, and working
together in major sectors of emerging technologies.
The discussions between the leaders were focused on deepening the growing partnerships
between Japanese prefectures and Indian states in the tech landscape.
PM Modi urged both the Japanese government and the Indian state governments to build
solid collaboration in manufacturing, mobility, innovation, and infrastructure.

This visit comes as a push for Made-in-India chips. Last week, PM Modi announced that
India’s first domestically manufactured semiconductor chip will be available in the market
by the end of this year.
As shared by the Union Minister, semiconductor company CG Semi will be working on the
first Made-in-India chips from Gujarat’s Sanand pilot facility.
